You don’t have to have an extensive upkeep garden to create a stunning garden. When choosing low maintenance plants, you can have a beautiful outdoor space without a lot of work. Here are ten resilient and easy-care plants to consider:
1. Creeping Sedum (Sedum spp.)
Stonecrop, or creeping sedum, is a hardy succulent that is happy in a variety of conditions. Due to its low growing habit and wide range of foliage colors, it is a great ground cover. Once established it is resistant to pests and requires little water.
2. Lavender (Lavandula spp.)
Fragrant purple blooms and silvery foliage are provided by lavender. It is drought tolerant and likes full sun with well draining soil. It is generally resistant to deer and pests, and minimal pruning after flowering keeps it tidy.
3. Coneflower (Echinacea spp.)
Coneflowers are native perennials with daisy-like flowers that attract pollinators. Drought tolerant and poor soil tolerant, they need little more than occasional deadheading to keep them blooming continuously.
4. Hostas (Hosta spp.)
Hostas are ideal for shaded areas and are available in many shades of green, blue and variegated patterns. They are low maintenance, just need regular watering and protection from slugs.
5. Daylilies (Hemerocallis spp.)
The daylilies produce vibrant, trumpet shaped flowers and can adapt to many soil types. Spent blooms naturally drop off, and they are drought tolerant and need very little care.
6. Russian Sage (Salvia yangii)
Russian sage has silvery foliage and lavender-blue flowers; it used to be known as Perovskia atriplicifolia. It is drought resistant and will grow in full sun with virtually no care other than a hard prune in early spring.
7. Ornamental Grasses
Feather reed grass (Calamagrostis) and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) varieties provide texture and movement to gardens. Drought tolerant and needing little care, they usually just need a cutback in late winter.
8. Yarrow (Achillea spp.)
The clusters of tiny flowers and feathery foliage are what Yarrow produces. It is drought tolerant and loves poor soils, and the bonus is it attracts beneficial insects.
9. Rudbeckia spp. (Black Eyed Susan)
These drought tolerant perennials are cheerful, yellow flowered and bloom profusely from summer to fall. They are easy to care for and make excellent pollinator gardens.
10. Catmint (Nepeta spp.)
Aromatic foliage and abundant purple-blue flowers are produced by catmint. It’s drought tolerant, deer resistant and has a long blooming period that needs very little maintenance other than occasional trimming.
Adding these easy-care plants to your garden will give you a lovely, maintenance free landscape that gives you more time to relax and enjoy your outdoor space.
