” Today on Local Backroads, we find ourselves at Los Vaqueros Reservoir, located in Contra Costa County. This reservoir is a hidden gem in Contra Costa. When you come to this reservoir, there’s actually two different entrances. The entrance set a little bit closer to Brentwood is an entryway into amazing hikes, wildlife, lots of birds, and it’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful place. Now, the entrance that’s farther down along Vasco Road brings you to the marina. The marina entrance at Los Vaqueros Reservoir also leads you to a lot of different trails. So the views between this entrance and the Brentwood entrance are really different. Over on this side, you can go up through the beautiful hills, there’s lots of access to wildlife, but you can always see the brilliant blue water as you explore the hillside. There is a lot of parking, and it’s ADA accessible all the way out to the pier for fishing and onto the boats, and there is also restrooms. If you wanted to come to the marina to go fishing, there is a few rules you do need to follow. First, if you’re over 16 years old, you do need a fishing license. So you’re not allowed to bring any kind of outdoor watercraft into the reservoir because it is protected water. There’s also the opportunity for you to go fishing from a boat. It is first come first serve, so you probably want to arrive a little bit early to guarantee that you get the boat that you’re looking for. Another important tip is that if you’re planning on spending the entire day between the two entrances, if you pay for parking at one entrance, that ticket is valid at the other one, as well. There are lots of picnic tables that really line the entire reservoir and right outside the bait shop, there’s actually covered picnic tables where you can enjoy a little bit of a breeze in the shade. Whether you prefer to spend the day fishing, hiking, or just exploring the hills, looking for wildlife, this is a great way to spend the day.
