Here are five design mistakes we see over and over – and what to do instead.
1. Treating the Pool and Landscape as Two Separate Projects
This is the big one. Homeowner hires a pool company, then brings in a landscaper after the pool is already in the ground. Now the landscaper is working around someone else’s decisions – equipment placement, drainage lines, deck elevation, material choices that were made without any thought to what surrounds them.
The result is a backyard that feels pieced together. The fix is simple but requires planning up front: design the pool and landscape at the same time, ideally with the same team. When every element is part of one cohesive plan, the space flows naturally from the back door to the water’s edge.
2. Ignoring Sightlines From Inside the House
Your pool isn’t just a backyard feature – it’s the view from your kitchen window, your living room, your bedroom. Too many designs focus only on how the space looks when you’re standing in it. Nobody thinks about the angle from the breakfast table where you’ll drink your coffee every single morning.
Good design accounts for every vantage point. Where do your eyes land when you look out the sliding door? What’s framed by the window above the sink? A pool that’s gorgeous from inside the house makes the whole home feel bigger and more connected to the outdoors.
3. Choosing Plants That Create Maintenance Nightmares
That beautiful flowering tree hanging over the pool edge? It’s going to drop petals, leaves, and pollen into the water every single day. Those tall grasses right next to the spa? Debris magnet. The wrong plant choices around a pool don’t just look messy – they clog filters, stain surfaces, and turn your relaxing retreat into a weekly cleaning project.
Strategic plant selection means choosing species that complement the pool without sabotaging it. Low-litter trees set back at the right distance, groundcovers that stay contained, and evergreen options that won’t dump leaves every fall. Your landscape should make the pool easier to enjoy, not harder to maintain.
4. Forgetting About Lighting Until the End
Lighting is one of those things that completely transforms a space, and it’s almost always an afterthought. Conduit needs to be run before hardscape goes in. Fixture placement needs to be coordinated with plant locations, water features, and seating areas. Bolt it on at the end and you get harsh floodlights mounted in awkward spots instead of the warm, layered glow that makes a backyard feel like a resort.
Plan lighting from the start. Underwater LED in the pool, pathway lights along the walkway, uplighting on specimen trees, and soft downlighting over the outdoor kitchen. When it all works together, your backyard is just as stunning at 9 PM as it is at noon.
5. Poor Drainage and Grade Planning
Water flows downhill. Sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many pool projects create drainage disasters because nobody thought through how the surrounding landscape handles runoff. Deck areas that pond after rain. Planter beds that erode toward the pool. Retaining walls that redirect water into places it was never supposed to go.
Proper grading around a pool is non-negotiable. Water needs to move away from the pool, away from the house, and into designated drainage points. This has to be engineered into the design from day one – not patched after the first big rain exposes the problem.
